The country is an evil organization and it's tough (for the nth time this season)
In today's edition of the Nikkei Shimbun, I wrote about that essay, "A Reading Technique That's Half a Step Behind," which is so fresh and interesting that it's hard to believe it was written over 50 years ago.
I wrote a recommendation for "The Pirate's Fiancee," a film directed by Nellie Kaplan that is now back in the spotlight. It's absolutely amazing!!! So everyone should see it!

Uncle Saunders was recently awarded the National Book Award for Outstanding Contributions to American Literature. ㊗️ Because of his friendly demeanor, I tend to call him "Uncle" (or even "Otchan"), but he's actually a very important figure! Sorry! Congratulations 👏
I didn't know that Sarah Jessica Parker was one of the judges for this year's Booker Prize. However, I've heard that if you are selected, you have to read a ton of books, which is extremely difficult.
Awesome!
Today, November 12th, is Lucia Berlin's birthday and the anniversary of her death. If she were still alive, she would be 89 years old this year, and would surely still be busy writing novels. I'm currently working hard to translate the remaining short stories that have not yet been published in book form.
CNN is constantly reporting on the hostages waiting for their release in Israel, but they barely mention the 2,000 Palestinians held captive by Israel...? Al Jazeera is doing both.
Speaking of Diane Keaton, this is my favorite scene. The scene at the end of "The First Wives Club" where she dances with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn to "You Don't Own Me." I feel so sad.
Misato Ugaki introduced my book "Secret Questions" on YouTube as one of her "Top 5 Recommended Essays" 📚️ I was so impressed by the President's comment that "I have never read an essay as fact" 📚️ The other selections are also fantastic! Please be sure to check them out 📚️
This tweet I made over 10 years ago still pops up every now and then and brings back memories.
I took a screenshot to share with future generations. The news will eventually disappear, so it's too good.
More, more photos
Today, August 27th, is the birthday of British author Jeanette Winterson 🎂㊗️🎉 It's been 23 years since I translated her debut novel, "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit." In 2019, her novel "Frankisstein" was longlisted for the Booker Prize, and she's been going strong ever since (like this below) 📚
The longlist for this year's Booker Prize is out! A year goes by so quickly. I've been putting off reading Katie Kitamura's Audition, so I'll take this opportunity to read it 📚 The Booker Prize 2025 | The Booker Prizes
Here is a list of stores that sell Shaun Tan capsule toys. Some stores may be sold out, but just for reference:
My essay "Curse♡" has been included in "Best Essays 2025." I'm honored to be included among such a distinguished group of writers.
It's on air today!
Today, July 15th, is Lydia Davis' birthday 🎊🎂👏 Congratulations to this great literary witch, I hope you continue to write amazing works that break the mold of novels 📚 She was cool when she was young, but her recent photos, where she looks great with her black cat, are also the coolest 🐈⬛
And take a look at the grinning face of the artist, Shaun Tan, who looks incredibly happy holding the finished figure in his hands.
However, I was completely taken by the adorableness of the knitted Semi doll that was shown to us by a customer during the final question time! The creator is Saki Ishimura, she's a genius!
Seriously
The Four Seasons! There are so many great songs like "Sherry" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" that I could die.
If you purchase a book with the Kodansha Bunko Spring Campaign obi, you will receive a Chiikawa x Yomuku cool bookmark. The books and participating bookstores are listed below.

Speaking of Chiyo Uno, this is the first thing that comes to mind for me. She won just for the title. She must have been almost 100 years old at the time. #ChiyoUno
Miranda July's first full-length novel, The First Bad Guy, has been reprinted four times, thanks to your support. This strange, astonishing, and yet heartwarming love story has been read for so long, and as a translator, it is a great pleasure for me. The autograph of Miranda, the winner of the Crest Books author autograph contest, is attached below.
A collaboration of Lucia Berlin and Chiikawa, something out of this world, was born...
Harvard sues Trump administration. Well, that's what happens.
Seriously?
The story of a woman who loved sausages so much she ended up working at a butcher's in Germany. It was so interesting I read it all in one go.
After a night had passed, I had received many congratulatory messages. I hope that all my subjects stay healthy and continue to devote themselves to reading strange books.
Before I knew it, a feature had been made about me and I was awarded the title of "Queen of Weird Books" 👑👑 #BookMagazine #WeirdNovel

I'm happy to be able to read Akiko Akasome's work again in this series. It's so cute that I have to take a commemorative photo next to her previous work, "Jam Pan Day" 📚 #AkikoAkasome #Hatsuko #palmbooks
Congratulations to the translators Kihara Yoshihiko and Sekine Ken, and to the publishers Genki Shobo and Astra House.
The sample of the twentieth printing of Chikuma Bunko's "Nemoto Type" has been completed, and a new obi for the fair has been added. Another nice point is that it comes with a "So, have you read it?"
In the May issue of "Subaru" now on sale, Murata Sayaka and the moderator Konan Amiko had a conversation about her latest novel, "Sekai 99". I feel that we were able to get a lot of important keywords to understand this enormous masterpiece. Please be sure to pick up a copy! 📚
This would be the winner
So, suddenly, we will be holding a thanksgiving event tonight! Anyone can participate remotely. For now, Ken Nishizaki and Motoyuki Shibata from the selection committee are scheduled to participate. We look forward to hearing from everyone who came to support us, our readers, and our translators.
Thanks to everyone's support, the crowdfunding campaign for the Japan Translation Award has reached its goal! We are truly grateful for your support. There are less than 10 hours left until the end. Please continue to support us so that we can continue for another year. We have lots of fun perks!
I'm really sorry to everyone who was looking forward to it...! I hope to see you at this time next week!
My favorite part of Naoto Takenaka's performance is his "Impersonation of Jippensha Ikku" (he was met with cheers of "It's just like him! It's just like him!") (or was this also a dream?)
beautiful…!
